Ford’s new aluminum pickup nears the market

Call it a risk, call it a gamble, call it a stroke of genius, but essentially Ford is making a bold move with the 2015 F-150 pickup. To shave weight and help meet new, tougher, fuel economy standards the company has committed to an all-aluminum body. The concept shaves 700 pounds off the weight of the truck and combined with one of two EcoBoost engines to be offered it could be an eco-winner.

Of course we’ve been using aluminum in the aircraft industry for years, and that’s considered a severe duty cycle application. Yet is any aluminum pickup ready to stand up to the work on your farm?

Not long ago the key point of competition was pulling power, and with pickups it basically still is, yet the manufacturers have also gotten into a throwdown over fuel economy that keeps heating up. Ram trucks turned up the heat with a new diesel engine for its 1500 series pickup, the first in this class. For Ford, the approach was to rethink the body, and we’ve written about this before.
