Pickup maker aims to create a new class

Japanese automakers look at U.S. auto sales stats and salivate knowing that the Ford F-150, Chevy Silverado and Ram 1500 are hot sellers. Toyota and Nissan have been putting a heavier foot forward with the revised Tundra from Toyota, and now after a few years without much new to talk about, Nissan steps up with the new Titan XD.

The company claims they are creating a "new class" of full-size pickup that "combines the capability of a heavy-duty hauler with the drivability and affordability of a light-duty pickup," says the press materials. While the 150/1500 class of pickup truck is popular in the country, it's the heavy duty machines in the 250/2500 class and higher that offer the true on-farm hauling.

Yet we thought this attempt to reach some kind of middle ground was interesting, so we present in this gallery a look at the new Nissan Titan XD which the company is calling the flagship of its 2016 pickup lineup.

The vehicles will be in showrooms later this year.
