Once called Ford, then New Holland, the old Versatile and Genesis tractor lines will now be offered by Buhler Industries. The Canadian company has traditionally made augers, loaders, snow blowers and bale wagons. Buhler bought the two tractor lines, and the Winnipeg factory where they are built, when the U.S. Justice Department required New Holland to divest some of its tractor lines before it merged with Case IH in 1999. (On the other side, Case IH sold its CX and MX lines to Landini, which now markets those tractors under the McCormick brand.)
So where have the Buhler Versatile tractors been for the past couple of years? Here's a long story made short: For one year, a contract agreement required Buhler to sell all the tractors it made to CNH. Then a Canadian labor union dispute halted production, confounding owner, John Buhler, for nearly another year. At one point Buhler threatened to move production out of Canada. But finally, the company reached a labor agreement. The result: Versatile and Genesis tractors will roll out of Winnipeg once again.
Five 4-wd Versatile models range from 240 to 425 hp. They include 12 × 4 Quadra Shift II transmission and Cummins engines. Four Genesis series models range from 145 to 210 hp. Options include 2-wd, standard front-wheel drive and SuperSteer front-wheel drive.
Buhler hopes to compete on price. Don't expect much new technology in these tractors, but do look for a price that's 5 to 10% below that of the competition. Contact Buhler Industries Inc., 1201 Regent Ave. W., Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada R2C 3B2, 204/661-8711, or www.buhler.com . – Wayne Wenzel
