Before heading out to the field, do a quick check of your tires to ensure they’re ready for the job. According to engineering research, proper tire maintenance can improve tractive efficiency (getting axle power to the ground) by up to 10 percent, which can save on fuel and extend the life of your tires.
“We’re advising customers to check their tires more often,” says Skip Sagar, marketing manager for Titan-Goodyear. He says operators should check air pressures daily and look for any signs of leakage or stalk penetration, which can lead to premature wear or downtime in the field.
Proper air pressure is based on load, and load varies with each implement. So it’s important to check inflation pressures every time you change field activities. Proper inflation will maximize the tire footprint, improve traction, reduce tire wear, and increase fuel efficiency.
Titan-Goodyear offers these steps to determine the optimum air pressure for the load:
1) Determine the maximum load you will be carrying for various applications (chisel, disk, planter, etc.). Stop by a local retailer that has a scale and weigh the tractor and implement. If that’s not an option, contact your local equipment dealer and ask them to provide the weight of the tractor and implement. Be sure to include additional weights if used and make sure any tanks are full to get the true maximum load on the axle.
2) Calculate the optimum inflation pressure. The Tire and Rim Association of America has established a set of recommendations for setting air inflation based on load. The tables can be accessed on the Internet, from tire manufacturer websites, or by contacting your local independent tire dealer.
