A responsive approach to the Web makes sense

The design of a Web page can be a personal choice, but there are times when issues outside the control of web designers can impact what you see. And why is this important? Your habits are driving a big change to how you'll interface with the Internet in the future and the first place to look is your smart phone.

Turns out our data shows that in many cases that is the first place you look - your smart phone. Which means our web information needs to be available to you in a format that makes sense for when you need it, not when you're in the comfort of your farm office after a hard day at work.

We've already retooled our website here at Farm Industry News to be 'responsive' which means if you come from a desktop computer you see it one way, a tablet will provide a different (and easy to read view) and it even looks good on your smart phone. That's a big driver to what's happening to websites for a range of information providers.

With more farmers reaching out for information from the smart phone, we had to be ready. But that also changes the way we design an e-newsletter too. And you're starting to see that change, I'm sure, from providers who offer you information.

On Tuesday, Farm Industry News Now was in a new "mobile responsive" format. That's why your e-newsletter looked different, and if you opened that email on your phone you would have noticed right away that it's easier to read and click through to useful information on our site.

As more farmers turn to smart phones and reach out with those tools to meet information needs, we as information providers need to step up too. Hence the changes you're seeing.

The percentage of farmers using smart phones to access our sites ranges as high as 50% sometimes - depending on the day, the site and the time of year. We want to be sure your experience is as good as it can be, so you'll keep coming back!

You'll probably hear more about "responsive" design, which just means the web page "responds" to the device that's accessing the information and presents the information in a readable format. Sounds simple, but it's not, which means you'll see websites 'evolve' toward responsive over the next few months.

It'll just make your smartphone that much more useful.
