These shows, like the massive National Farm Machinery Show (NFMS), are really a farmer’s version of a shopping mall. At the recent NFMS, videographer Jim Radford and I shadowed Nebraska farmer Scott McPheeters. He has been a Farm Industry News Team FIN member for many years and is part of a family farm operation near Gothenburg.
Following McPheeters was eye-opening. First, he was wearing a new pair of ostrich-skin boots he’d bought at the show. Then he took us by the Air Filter Blaster booth where we learned he had purchased a blaster, too.
Next it was Digi-Star. McPheeters already owns some of the company’s precision weighing equipment. He toyed with the idea of buying more, but then passed on it.
Gecko Toes was next where McPheeters had bought several storage racks for cords. I got into the action too and bought four racks.
We headed to the Kemco booth to watch the Drop Deck Trailer hydraulically move up and down for easy loading. McPheeters got on the phone with his son Clark to discuss another possible purchase. The idea was canned because the trailer was too narrow for their skid-steer loader with tracks.
An impulse purchase occurred at the Bushnell booth. McPheeters bought night-vision goggles and the videographer joined him by buying binoculars.
At Trouble Free Lighting, we learned McPheeters again had made a purchase. He bought work lights that can be thrown and stomped on without breaking.
At this point, I realized that farmers can be just as eager to shop as bargain hunters at a big-box store, especially when they’re around stuff they love.
